These
drawings, "Studies in Sanguine"–sanguine for both their
color and their passion–are about human desire and private acts,
social scrutiny and moral judgment. "In these drawings," the
artist explains, "I wanted to see if I could integrate formal and
humanistic concerns and visually address the conflicts we as artists and
as a culture experience between the concepts of 'nude' and 'naked.' It
is especially intriguing because this is very much a part of the larger
current debate on the walls of art galleries between modern and post-modern,
and in the halls of government between conservative and liberal.
"All art is a sensory sublimation for real-life experiences. I believe the sensuous, erotic nature of these drawings illustrates that one cannot perceive without holding in one's mind the nude and confronting nakedness and thus confronting our own conflicting desires and society's mores."
